Flasher Technique
While there are many techniques to use when taking to the field with a Montana Decoy, one of the most popular is using the ‘Flasher’ movement. All Elk flick their ears as they try to ward off insects, signal other Elk and gather sound. This technique does not require the leg poles in the field. When hunting in a duo or more the hunter in the rear of the group will hold up the decoy across their face with one finger placed on one of the ears. When that 6x6 takes notice and responds to your calls the ‘flasher’ will slowly move the decoy and use their index finger to casually flick the ears which will emulate a real Cow Elk movement in the field. Top notch hunters have used this model for many years and have led many Bulls into their domain. Once the bull realizes what is going on, if he knows, the ‘flasher’ has drawn the bull in enough to provide a shot for the hunter in the foreground. For even better use, pair this with an Elk Rump or Miss September in the background to show the bull there are a few Cows who need attention.
How to pack in with the RMEF Elk
| | | |
---|
Initiating the FoldGrab the decoy with one hand (thumb down) near the neck and the other hand (thumb up) on the rear of the elk and begin to twist into a figure-8 movement. | The TwistOnce the twisting movement has began you will slowly move your hands inward and begin the figure-8. | Beginning the CloseThe decoy will twist into it self with your hand movements and you will begin to see the shape of a large frisbee take hold. | The FinishOnce you have completed the figure-8 you will have the frisbee like shape with the head sticking out. Just take the head to fold on top of the decoy. Take your elastic wrap to fold around the decoy to hold it. Place the leg stakes through the band and you are ready to stuff this into a pack. The whole movement takes less than 30 seconds if using it as a flasher and less than 60 seconds if including folding up the leg poles. This quick movement makes Montana Decoys fastest set-up and take down decoys on the market. |
